The story of SM Group started in the tranquil town of Palasbari, nestled in the heart of Assam, from where our founding member Late Mohan Lalji Jain embarked on a journey that would become a remarkable legacy. They were humble traders, dealing in raw produce; their roots deeply intertwined with the rich soil of their homeland.
It was the year 1957 when he decided to take a leap of faith and moved to the bustling city of Guwahati along with his family, where a new dawn was envisioned by him. With unwavering determination and a keen eye for opportunity, Late Mohan Lalji Jain introduced the concept of thinner gauge roofing sheets to the region. It was a revolutionary idea, one that would forever change the landscape of construction in Northeast India. He would come to be known as the “Architect of Thinner Gauge Roofing Sheet” in Northeast India, a title earned through relentless dedication and a pioneering spirit. His visionary leadership and commitment to excellence propelled the roofing sheet business to new heights
In the year 1973-74, SM Group decided to take another monumental step. It established its own manufacturing plant for roofing sheets, an endeavour that marked a significant milestone. With technical assistance from Japan, SM Group built a state-of-the-art facility and named it Kamrup Roofings Ltd. This plant not only met the growing demand for roofing sheets but also set the standard for quality and innovation in the industry.
The year 2000 brought with it a new chapter – SM Group recognized opportunities beyond roofing sheets and diversified into various sectors. It forayed into the metallurgical coke industry, colour-coated roofing sheet industry and also joined hands for steel distribution with Tata Steel – all combined marking a major turning point. And this was when the identity of SM Group came into being !
Thereon, SM Group added another jewel to its crown—Bitchem Asphalt Technologies Ltd., a road science and technology company that further diversified the group’s offerings while still staying closely aligned with the construction & infrastructure industry.
Around 2010, the group decided to venture into real estate development; giving rise to SM Developers, a name that has become synonymous with highest quality and reliability. Gradually, SM Group also announced its foray into the world of hospitality with not one but two 5-star properties namely the Vivanta Shillong and Novotel Guwahati – both offering a world-class experience to the travellers.

From humble beginnings in Palasbari to becoming pioneers in multiple industries, SM Group has left an indelible mark on the business landscape of Northeast India.
