SM Group commenced its business operations through establishing the steel division, represented by SM Ispat Limited, instituted in the 1950s.

SM Ispat laid the foundation for the Group’s beginnings by importing high-quality steels products and distributing them in the Northeast. As a result, the Company reinforced its distribution might through an embedded presence across strategic untapped consumption pockets and not only derived a first-mover’s advantage, but also stimulated demand through marketing innovative and cost-effective steel products.

In doing so, it revolutionised the distribution of GP/GC sheets in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Leveraging this experience, it also commenced distribution of steel products in the Northeast from reputed domestic manufacturers.

Today, the steel distribution division comprising SM Ispat Limited and SM Corporation is perhaps the largest distributor of value-added steel products in the Northeast.

SM Corporation has been Tata Steel’s business development partner for the Northeast region since 2001 and does business with the following Tata products – Tata Tiscon, Tata Pipes, Tata Agrico and Tata Structura. In these years, the Company has received various awards and due recognition from Tata for its outstanding service and reach.

The Company’s innovative way of doing business has earned it respect as a trusted partner who believes in not just selling products but creating sustainable businesses for end-users.
